James M. Moss Professor of Diabetes, University of Virginia Health System

Zhenqi Liu, M.D. holds the James M. Moss Professorship of Diabetes and is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Virginia Health System. He earned his medical degree from Xiangya School of Medicine in China, completed his residency in medicine at the Washington Hospital Center and pursued a clinical fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Virginia. Additionally, he received postdoctoral research training at both Yale University and the University of Virginia. From 2012 to 2021, he served as Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Virginia. Dr. Liu has a translational research program which focuses on insulin resistance and vascular complications of diabetes. His team conducts physiological and molecular studies to study insulin signaling and action, GLP-1 action, vascular function, and energy metabolism. His clinical and academic interests include diabetes and other endocrine disorders. A key contribution of his research has been the elucidation of the central role of microvascular insulin action and resistance in the development of diabetes and its complications. He has published more than 160 peer-reviewed papers, with his research programs supported by the National Institutes of Health and the American Diabetes Association. He has also served on numerous national and international committees and journal editorial boards.
