Dana E Brackney is a Registered Nurse, Researcher, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) and Board-Certified Advance Diabetes Management (BC-ADM). Dana is currently a full professor and director of graduate programs in nursing at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Dana has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and is an experienced public speaker. Dana maintains a weekly clinical practice in an outpatient ADA recognized diabetes self-management and education support (DSMES) program. Before joining the faculty at AppState, Dana worked as a CDCES for 10 years in a primary care practice serving people living in rural areas with limited access to medical specialists. Dana’s sustained work of over 30 years as a CDCES in both inpatient and outpatient areas demonstrates commitment to this area of clinical practice. In 2022, Dana began serving on the Board of Directors for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education with a desire to promote excellence and value in the specialty. Recently, Dana’s Maine coon cat, Simon, has been diagnosed with diabetes that is currently in remission.
